Pearl shell enter the Aboriginal trade routes on the North West Kimberley Coast and travel thousands of kilometers inland to the east and the south, handed on by senior Aboriginal Male trading partners deep into the Central Australian desert. Often pearl shell are ground down little by little as they travel from ceremony to ceremony and eventually become elongated pendants which are often worn on the forehead, upper arm or neck (see engraved pendant in gallery). Full size new pearl shell are suspended from hair string belts in front of the pubic tassle.
