An outstanding aspect of the Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) rock art is its sheer beauty. This book, with its many creative and artistic features, is designed to display that beauty and does so exquisitely. The inherent difficulty of working with such a quantity and variety of different images is elegantly overcome. The wide landscape pages (35cm x 25cm) are used well with a four column layout. Within this framework, Walsh employs variations of up to a full page for an image. The diversity of maps, photographs, rock art silhouettes and drawings show a remarkable degree of coherence in being displayed within the text. Creative use of backgrounds allows the images to stand alone, where appropriate, as works of art. The quality of the photography is superb. The jacquard patterning is effective in enhancing areas of plain text. The tastefully designed endpapers are enhanced by the designs of the section openers. Overall, this production is not only a powerful presentation of a deeply moving form of aboriginal art, but a breathtaking work of artistic book production in its own right.
