Pacific North West Coast Moon Mask

Pacific North West Coast Moon Mask

Fine elegant example of a traditional old Northwest Coast American Indian moon mask.

The mask may be Haida and or Kwakwaka'wakw tradition. Pacific Northwest Coast Indian masks are mainly used for ceremonial purposes.  This mask depicts a young man's face in a full moon. Beautiful very powerful bold three dimensional form presenting a subdued presence of spirit. The carving on the mask is sure & gorgeous.

Fine condition overall; there are  scratches in different areas on the mask and some bruising. The craftsmanship & execution is superior and even with minor age flaws  this superb mask displays beautifully.  Embedded old small delicate yellow early trade bead decoration on mask fringe – some minor loss.  Old deep warm glow age patina.

Unknown Haida artist.
Wood (maple/alder/cedar?).  Unpainted (may have painted once? However no vestige indicator remain present).

Width: 38 cm (15 inches)
